Reading is more than recognising words. Children also need to understand what they read, remember important details and think about the meaning of a story.
These free reading comprehension passages for kids are designed to give children simple and enjoyable reading practice using short stories followed by comprehension questions.
They are ideal for children around 7–10 years old and can be used at home, in the classroom or as extra literacy practice.
What Is Reading Comprehension?
Reading comprehension is a child’s ability to understand and think about what they have read.
For example, after reading a short story, a child might be asked:
- Who was the story about?
- Where did the story happen?
- What happened first?
- Why did a character make a particular choice?
- What do you think might happen next?
These questions encourage children to look beyond individual words and think about the whole text.

Reading Passage 3: A Rainy Day Adventure
It began raining just as Ava and Sam were getting ready to play outside.
At first, they were disappointed.
Then their mother suggested building an indoor fort.
Ava collected blankets while Sam found pillows and chairs.
Together, they built a large fort in the living room.
They brought books, a torch and some snacks inside.
Soon, they forgot all about the rain.

Reading Passage 4: The Helpful Neighbour
Noah noticed his neighbour carrying several heavy shopping bags.

Together, they carried the shopping to the front door.
“Thank you, Noah,” she said.
Noah felt proud that he had been able to help.

Reading Passage 5: The Library Book
Lily loved visiting the library after school.

Lily borrowed the book and read it before bed.
The next day, she told her teacher three facts she had learned about the solar system.
Her teacher suggested that Lily create a small poster for the class.
Lily was excited to share what she had learned.

How to Use the Reading Passages
Ask the child to read the passage slowly.
If they find a difficult word, encourage them to first try reading the word using the surrounding sentence for clues.
After reading, ask them to answer the questions without immediately looking back at the story.
They can then return to the passage to check their answers.
This encourages children to practise both remembering information and locating information in a text.
Talk About the Story
Reading comprehension doesn’t always need to involve written questions.
You can also discuss the passage together.
Try questions such as:
What was your favourite part?
Why did the character do that?
What would you have done?
What do you think happened next?
Did this story remind you of something you’ve experienced?
These open-ended questions encourage children to explain their thinking.
Build Vocabulary
When children encounter an unfamiliar word, avoid simply giving them the answer straight away.
Look at the sentence together and ask:
“What do you think this word might mean?”
Then discuss the meaning and try using the word in another sentence.
This helps children learn how to use context when reading unfamiliar vocabulary.
Try Sequencing the Story
After reading a passage, ask children to explain what happened:
First
Next
Then
Finally
Sequencing helps children understand how events are organised within a story.
You can also write the main events on separate pieces of paper and ask children to arrange them in the correct order.
Encourage Complete Answers
As children become more confident, encourage them to answer questions using complete sentences.
Instead of:
“The garden.”
Try:
“Mia found the seed in the garden.”
This gives children additional practice with sentence structure, spelling and written communication.

Keep Reading Practice Positive
Choose passages that are appropriate for the child’s current reading ability.
If a passage contains too many difficult words, reading can quickly become frustrating.
It is completely fine to read the story together.
An adult can read part of the passage aloud while the child follows along.
As confidence develops, children can gradually take on more independent reading.
